Verfügbarkeit

The proportion of time a system is available, typically guaranteed as a percentage.

Definition

Availability indicates how reliably a service can be reached, measured as the ratio of uptime to total time. Common figures include 99.9% ("three nines", approximately eight and a half hours of downtime per year) or 99.99%. It is typically agreed upon in a Service Level Agreement (SLA), often with consequences for falling below the threshold. Availability is closely linked to contingency planning, RTO/RPO, and the underlying architecture.

was für Dienstleister bedeutet

For service providers, guaranteed availability is a central topic in both sales and contracts, and a recurring theme in tenders. Clients want to know the percentage figure, the measurement methodology, and the measures behind it. This information is contained in SLAs and architecture documents, yet it has to be formulated anew for every inquiry. Those who keep their availability commitments and their technical basis readily at hand can respond quickly and avoid contradictory information across different proposals.
